2008年的國家永續發展獎，全國計有十四個單位獲獎，花蓮的碧雲莊社區在永續社區獎裡是唯一的城市型獲獎單位。

社區理事長蔡長書指出，全國3600多個社區中，只有兩個鄉村型及一個都市型社區獲得國家永續發展獎，碧雲莊社區代表花蓮縣接受挑戰，也是全國唯一都市型社區永續發展獎得主。

『怡然居』三生有幸，能夠座落在碧雲莊這個桃花源。社區這十幾年來靠著一群志工長期默默地投入社區發展工作，目前社區的各項成就已是全國之冠，獲得環保示範社區、六星計畫補助重點社區等獎勵。這群愛家、愛社區的志工，有許多人是在慈濟志業體服務，同時也是慈濟志工（主要原因是因為慈濟園區就在近左），碧雲莊社區的環保資源回收更是悉數捐予慈濟，為慈善工作盡心盡力。
